Skilled Nursing Homes
Is A Long-Term Skilled Nursing Home Appropriate For You?
Nursing Homes, or Long-Term Skilled Nursing Facilities, are for people that can no longer care for themselves and/or have medical needs that require around the clock nursing care. In order to be accepted to a Skilled Nursing Facility, patient residents must undergo an evaluation by a medical professional and must have a doctors order to be admitted.
Medicare only pays 100% for 20 days, then about 80% for the next 80 days. Beyond that first 100 days, patients are responsible for paying on their own through personal funds or a Long-Term Care insurance policy.
The average cost of Skilled Nursing is about $7000 - $10,000 a month.
If funds run completely out then Medicaid can step in to pay 100%. BUT only some facilities accept Medicaid and the patient must qualify for the low-income and low-assets standards that Medicaid requires.
Please see our list of Skilled Nursing Facilities below.
